This fall the Social Justice Committee sponsored or took part in:
PEACE FESTIVAL: FUUSE participated by having a table where visitors obtained information about UUA positions on: Health Care Reform; LBGT anti-discrimination proposals and petitions supporting nuclear non-proliferation treaties.
HEALTH CARE CONVERSATION: FUUSE member NH Representative Donna Schlachman presented information on the legislative process in Concord, and shared with us a list of bills related to health care which we can follow in the coming legislative session.
ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES: Two courses involved interesting discussions led by outside experts: Charles Clements, president of the UUSC, talked about his personal experiences as a war resister in the first of two meetings on “UU’s and the Inconvenient Conscience”. A conversation followed about what issues on which we might want to take action for change — and the obstacles to civil disobedience. In the second course, Chuck Collins, co-founder of Wealth for the Common Good and a board member of Just Democracy, led the discussion on “UUs and the Moral Challenge of Money”. Collins shared his personal experience in forming groups that will take leadership positions in striving for a more equitable society that cares about solidarity among all. He distributed books and comic books he has authored, and provoked a lively conversation!
SUNDAY LAY-LED SERVICE: In September, Anne Stanback, founder of Connecticut’s Love Makes a Family, which led the successful legislation permitting equal marriage in her state, gave an inspiring sermon in which she told her personal story and challenged us to continue the national struggle for equity and fairness for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender individuals. |
